Work life balance techniques that employees can use

Below are some work life balance techniques that employees can use to maintain a stable mental and physical wellbeing.

  1. Set limits – Life isn’t all about work, remember the saying “All work and no play, makes Jack a dull boy” (or Jill a dull girl).
  2. Manage your time – Give yourself enough time to get things done. Set realistic, achievable targets.
  3. Learn to say “no.” – Organise your tasks based on priority. Although it’s nice to lend a helping hand, remember to complete your own to-do list before helping others with theirs.
  4. Log off on time – Working from home can make it difficult to distinguish a clear border between work and home. It’s important to ensure you still have time to spend with your family and to do things that are important to you.
  5. Flexible working hours – You’re likely to be less stressed if you have more control over your hours. Instead of trying to fit everything into a small time frame, ask your employer if you’re able to complete some of your tasks at a different time, outside of your work schedule, while still ensuring you’re meeting deadlines.
  6. Exercise, nutrition and sleep – A healthy lifestyle = a healthy mindset. Don’t forget to include physical activity into your daily routine and make sure you’re getting enough rest in order to tackle each day.
  7. Me time – Set time aside for the activities you enjoy, for example, yoga, painting or reading. Hobbies are a big part of who we are and they can help to take your mind of work and give your mind a break.
  8. Doing things for others – Develop your relationships with others by volunteering to help them. Helping others can also give you a sense of achievement and make you feel useful.
  9. People who play together, stay together – Having co-workers who can cover for you when you need it (and vice versa) can relieve the pressure of having to do it all yourself, especially when having to deal with family conflicts or personal issues. Or, if for example you need help with child care, ask a loved one if they can help you with this, if and when you have to work late.
  10. Reward yourself – Be proud of your achievements. Work can sometimes be very demanding and mentally draining. It’s important to be able to congratulate yourself and admire your work.
